ASVEL's Potential Contractual Difficulties
Following Monaco's challenging season, many in French basketball believed they had witnessed the peak of dramatic events. However, the situation at Villeurbanne suggests otherwise. A highly anticipated new project, bolstered by renowned recruits and Tony Parker leading a staff typically seen in the NBA, appears to be collapsing before it has truly begun.
Sylvain Francisco, the franchise player Tony Parker envisioned and whose arrival was widely celebrated weeks ago, is already departing. More significantly, he is set to join another Euroleague powerhouse. Given the substantial contracts reportedly offered by the Lyon-based club, with Francisco's alone allegedly costing €4 million annually, according to insider Alessandro Maggi, the French international may be the first of several departures.
Joel Bolomboy and Daniel Theis, whose transfers to ASVEL were strongly rumored though not yet official, were expected to sign deals worth €1.8 million and €1.5 million respectively. It now seems unlikely the club will be able to honor these commitments. Armoni Brooks, the MVP of the Italian league and a key component of Coach Parker's project, was slated to earn €2.4 million per year in Villeurbanne, but may never don the jersey of the most decorated team in the French championship.
Furthermore, the contracts of Nick Weiler-Babb and Both Gach, while their exact figures are unknown, are now more uncertain than ever.
In essence, this is just the beginning of a new saga that unfortunately threatens to damage French basketball.
